Existing electoral system should be changed: Chair Dahal

POKHARA, June 4: Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that it is necessary to change the existing election system in the country.

Speaking at a news conference organized by the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Province no 4 on Monday, Chairperson Dahal added that discussion is underway at the leadership level for the same as the election had been becoming costlier.

Saying that there was a significant role of communists in the establishment of democracy and republic in the country, he said that active participation of communists was necessary to strengthen them.

The former prime minister furthered that an agreement regarding directly elected executive head was nearly reached in the first Constituent Assembly and added that it had been decided to hold the election under the existing model for the time being bearing in mind the then political equation and changing context during the second Constituent Assembly.

“NCP and the party that had recently joined the government are in favor of directly elected executive chief, it is the matter of discussion at people and party-level. It is not the current agenda of discussion, however”, he said.

Stating that budget at province-level and local-level would be increased gradually in coming days, Chairman Dahal expressed the view that prosperity and development are the challenge of the government as political stability has been established along with party unification.
