KATHMANDU, June 20: Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN) has decided to amend its party statute and hold the general convention next year.

A meeting of the party political committee held on Wednesday took the decision to amend the statute and hold the general convention on April 20, 21 and 22 next year.

Earlier this month, the Election Commission (EC) had written to RJPN to hold the general convention by July 14. RJPN, which was formed after the six Madhes-based parties: Tarai Madhes Democratic (TMDP), TMDP-Nepal, Sadbhawana Party, Sanghiya Sadbhawana Party, Madhesi People’s Rights Forum (Republican) and Rastriya Madhes Samajbadi Party unified last year, was registered at the EC in July 2017. Article 22 (10) of RJPN’s statute has a provision to hold the general convention within a year. In response to the EC’s letter, RJPN had sought six additional months to hold the convention.

But the party concluding that the convention could not held within six months, even after receiving positive nod from the EC, decided to amend the statute.

The RJPN, during the meeting, also decided to write to the EC about the decision to amend the Article 22 (10) of the statute.

The party has also decided to form a three-member statute revision committee.
