Stranded Indian pilgrims to be rescued by 14 helicopters

KATHMANDU, July 3: Over thousand Kailash Mansoravar bound Indian pilgrims, who were stranded in Simikot and Hilsa of Jumla due to bad weather, will be rescued by 14 army helicopters.

“Our pilgrims are coming back. I spoke to the Indian Embassy in Nepal. Today 14 flights flies to Simikot,” tweeted Shobha Karandlaje, an Indian politician from Karnataka. The pilgrims were left stranded in Jumla after the flights to and fro the regions were canceled due to incessant rain and bad weather.

After learning about the information about the stranded pilgrims, Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had initiated the rescue efforts to bring the pilgrims back home safely.

“Indian pilgrims stranded in Nepal- There are about 525 pilgrims stranded in Simikot, 550 in Hilsa and another 500 in Tibet side,” tweeted Swaraj.

“Indian Embassy in Nepal has deployed representatives in Nepalgunj and Simikot. They are in touch with the pilgrims and ensuring that food and lodging facilities are available to all the pilgrims,” she tweeted.

Health camps have been set up in the Simikot for elderly pilgrims to undergo heath check-up and to provide other medical assistance. Earlier, the Indian Embassy had requested the Government of Nepal for army helicopters to evacuate the stranded Indian nationals.

Thousands of Indian pilgrims take part in the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra every year via Nepal in the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China ahead of monsoon season.

The tour is organised by the Ministry of External Affairs each year between June and September in cooperation with the government of People’s Republic of China through two different routes – Lipulekh Pass (Uttarakhand) and Nathu La Pass (Sikkim).
