RSS should be developed as credible public news agency-leader Thapa
Kathmandu, Nov 15 : Nepali Congress (NC) leader Gagan Kumar Thapa has underlined the need for developing Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) into a credible public news agency.
Addressing the third convention of the Nepal Press Union RSS Chapter at RSS central office at Bhadrakali today, Thapa said, “RSS should be developed as a trustworthy public agency”.
He further stressed the need for gradually prospering the news agency as an important institution working for people’s access to authentic information. He suggested making the content generated from the RSS reliable. “Infringement of press freedom in a democratic country is not possible”, he noted.
Thapa, also former minister for health, made it clear that the Nepali Congress would help government in implementing the Constitution, however would also keep vigil on the affairs against the people.
The government should devise its all-out efforts to institutionalize achievements of the people’s movement and build on prosperous country, Thapa argued.
On the occasion, NPU acting President Deepak Acharya highlighted the need for developing RSS as an agency for producing and disseminating impartial news.
The government has come up with suppressive press law undermining the freedom of expression, he said, warning that the NPU would launch nationwide protest if such regressive laws were not amended.
RSS general manager Opendra Sharma urged the different organizations functional at RSS to work for strengthening organization by exploring solutions to the problems.
Also speaking on the occasion were RSS former Central Chairperson duo, Kul Chandra Wagle and Ramesh Toofan, FNJ Vice-chairperson Bipul Pokharel, Chairperson of National Society of Democratic Print Media Damodar Prasad Dawadi, Press Union RSS Chapter Vice-Chair Mohini Mishra. NPU Press Union Chapter President Narayan Prasad Ghimire chaired the programme.
