‘Driver’s negligence the main cause behind road accidents’

Narayan Dhungana : Kathmandu, Nov 15 : Driver’s negligence is found the main cause behind road accidents. 

Police Spokesperson Uttam Raj Subedi said that out of the road accidents occurred during Dashain and Tihar festivals, 72 per cent road accident took place due to the driver’s negligence.

A total of 707 road accident took place across the nation during festivals. Of them, driver’s negligence was found on 512 accidents.

One hundred and 51 people lost their lives while 979 people sustained injuries in these accidents. Police had carried out study in order to find out the reasons behind road accidents occurred during the main festivals—Dashain and Tihar.

Subedi said, “Most of the accidents were found occurred due to driver’s negligence”, adding that overtake, over speed and consumption of alcohol are other causes behind the increasing number of road accidents.

Although traffic police launched different awareness programmes with an objective to reduce road accidents, but in vain. A total of 205 road accidents took place during Tihar. Of them, 154 were occurred due to driver’s negligence, which is around 75 per cent of the total number of road accidents, said police.

Thirty-nine people died and 230 were injured in different road accidents from November 5-10 in Tihar.

Likewise, out of 355 road accidents occurred during Dashain, 242 road accidents (around 68 per cent) took place due to driver’s negligence, said Subedi. A total of 112 people were killed and 749 people sustained injuries in road accidents that took place from October 10 -22.

Out of 707 road accidents occurred across the nation during Dashain and Tihar, 333 took place in Kathmandu Valley. A total of 15 people lost their lives and 177 were injured in the accidents, according to the Police Headquarters.
