Prime Minister Oli for making universities as life science schools
Kathmandu, Dec. 31 : Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the universities should be developed as the schools for life science instead of institutions merely to teach theories.
Addressing the 44th convocation ceremony of the Tribhuvan University (TU) today, the PM said that universities should adopt education to ensure realization in the practical life of the students. The PM was against the idea of developing varsities only as the reading institutions.
The Prime Minister also the Chancellor of TU said, “We could see even the university graduates failing in the basic steps of their life leading to their pathetic life. Universities’ attention should be heed to produce exemplary and role model graduates for the families and the societies.”
Universities should produce the students for the greater good of the society and those students can advance the society to the directions of modernity, the PM added.
“We need to first specify the need for categories and numbers of the human resources to meet our development target. And then we can determine where to establish which colleges and the subjects to teach there,” according to the PM.
On the occasion, the PM opined his views on accessibility of education to the people of all classes and communities by ending the inequalities.
Likewise, the PM said that the TU should pay attention to produce competitive and outstanding graduates to fit in the global market.
In his speech at the ceremony, Professor of South Asian Economics at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Mahendra P Lama stressed that the TU should provide practical education. TU should give priority to the education out of the classroom as external education is more practical than the classroom education, he shared.
Similarly, Minister for Education, Science and Technology and Prof-Chancellor of the TU, Girirajmani Pokharel, underscored the need of developing TU as the centre of excellence by promoting it as the research-based organisation.
Education Minister Pokharel said that the TU should make its identity across the world to prove itself as a capable institution.
He said, “TU should make the students competitive in the world in order to contribute in nation building campaign by facing challenges surfaced in changing context.”
Likewise, Vice-Chancellor of TU, Prof Dr Tirtharaj Khaniya, said the TU should be made as the national university, adding that TU would take technical education ahead with high priority.
Out of 74,282 students, who obtained their transcript from June 1, 2017 to June 14, 2018, altogether 9,504 students were graduated. Of them, 6,309 students participated in the convocation ceremony.
