We are innocent, say Bam sisters in tears

Nirmala Panta rape and murder case

KATHMANDU, Jan 22: Roshani Bam and Babita Bam, who the local public believe have crucial leads to Nirmala rape and murder case, clarified they are innocent.

The rape and murder case involved rape and murder of Nirmala Panta, a 13-year old school girl of Bhimdattanagar that occurred on July 26 last year. Her body was found in a sugarcane field the next day.

In an interview with Rishi Dhamala at a television program ‘Janata Janna Chahanchan’, the Bam sisters expressed resentment that they were being forcefully portrayed as criminals.

“Nirmala came to us to study and returned after three hours. We are ignorant of what happened after that,” said the sisters breaking out in tears.

Investigation showed that Panta went to the Bam’s house, which is one and a half kilometers away from her home, around 11 am and spent 3 hours there before she left around 3 pm afterwards but she did not reach home.

Her relatives filed a complaint about her missing in a local police station. Her dead body was found in a waterlogged sugarcane field in Nimbukheda, 500 meters far from Bam’s House. A forensic report stated that Panta was raped and murdered after.

Bam sisters were detained for interrogation on 23 August 2018 in connection of Panta’s rape and murder case. Police later released Roshani on condition of presenting herself before the police if required. Her sister Babita was freed on Rs 30,000 bail.

Bam sisters also criticized the media of playing a role to criminalize them without investigating to the core of the Kanchanpur rape and murder case.

They also denied they had been to Opera Hotel on the day the incident took place.
