KATMANDU, May 31: Renowned industrialist Prabhakar Sumsher Junga Bahadur Rana has passed away in New York, the United States on Thursday. He was 84.

According to his family sources, Rana died while undergoing treatment at Rehabilitation Center, where he was admitted a year ago.

Rana, the grandson of Juddha Sumsher Rana, is the chairman of Emeritus of Soaltee Crowne Plaza and has been engaged in a number of sectors particularly hospitality, trade, automobiles and hydropower. He is also considered as the pioneer of the Nepali hotel industry.

He is also the Chairman of Surya Enterprises Private Limited.

Prabhakar Rana established Sipradi Trading Pvt. Ltd. In 1982 which became the exclusive distributor of Tata Motors Ltd. for Nepal in the same year.

Graduated in Bachelor in Arts (first class with honors) from Patna University, Rana was honored with many national medal and British medals. He was also a life member of PATA and Emeritus President of Hotel Association Nepal.

Prabhakar Rana’s last rites will be performed in the US, according to the family.

Rana’s entire business operation has been currently taken care of by his son Siddhartha SJB Rana. Siddhartha has often been named as the top individual income taxpayer in Nepal, while Surya Nepal has often made it to the list of top 10 tax-paying enterprises. In addition, Sipradi Trading is amongst the highest tax-paying trading enterprises in Nepal bagging the award in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
