Sujata calls for accepting dissenter’s term to hold CA election

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) central committee member Sujata Koirala has stressed on conceding to some conditions of dissenting 33 political party alliances to hold Constituent Assembly (CA) elections in consensus.

Speaking at an interaction at the Reporter’s Club in the Capital, the former deputy prime minister said that the major party led High Level Political Mechanism (HLPM) should bring CPN Maoist and its allies on board by conceding to their demands of deferring elections to a later date.

She said that a major political force – CPN Maoist – could not be left out of the CA elections while warning of undue confrontations if the CA elections are held by alienating the dissenting parties.

“Elections cannot ensure peace and stability as long as the CPN-Maoist-led political alliance continues to boycott the polls,” she said, adding that an election imposed through army mobilisation could provoke violence and bloodshed in the country.

Moreover, Koirala opined that the Chairman of the Interim Election Council (IEC) Khil Raj Regmi should readily resign as Chief Justice (CJ) if that brings CPN-Maoist and its allies to a meeting point.

On a note to NC’s candidacy nomination, Koirala pressed for her nomination in the party’s Parliamentary Board.

Speaking at the same programme, UCPN-Maoist leader Top Bahadur Rayamajhi echoed Koirala stating that Regmi should not think twice before resigning at the interest of the country’s welfare.

In a different context, Rayamajhi claimed that his party would garner two-third majority in the forthcoming elections.
