Youth gets 5 yrs in jail for raping mentally retarded lady

DAMAULI, APR 16: The Tanahun District Court sent an 18-year-old youth to jail for five years with Rs 20,000 fine for raping a mentally retarded woman in Tanahun.

A single bench of District Judge Balabhadra Banstola has sentenced the punishment on Sunil Ranabhat from Bhirkot-5 of the district on Wednesday. Ranbhat had raped and impregnated the mentally challenged woman in Tanahun on March 4, while she had gone to jungle to fetch fodders and firewood. The victim’s family had filed the case against Ranabhat after they found that the woman was pregnant.

Police had started an investigation by arresting the culprit on April 7 and filed a rape case against him. According to Surya Prasad Bhandari, Registrar of the District Court, the Court issued the verdict within five days of registration of the case. He was in police custody since April 12.
