JOCV celebrating 50th anniversary tomorrow



Kathmandu, Dec 25: Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) of JICA is celebrating 50th anniversary of its establishment and 45th anniversary of JOCV establishment in Nepal on Saturday.

The programme will have photo exhibition (JOCV’s activities during the April Earthquake and 45 years’ activities by JOCV in Nepal), cultural exchange followed by Nepali traditional dance.

It may be noted that JICA held an anniversary on November 17 in Tokyo for the fifth anniversary of JOCV. It was attended by the Emperor and Empress of Japan, 4,500 former volunteers and supporters. Overseas offices are also celebrating in their respective country, JOCV said in a press statement.

In Nepal, JOCV started with three volunteer dispatched in agriculture sector at Rapti farm in September 1970. The volunteers are categorized into senior and junior volunteers. They have worked all over the Nepal and been working even in the remote areas for the socio economic development of Nepal. The number of volunteers dispatched by JICA to Nepal in last 45 years reached 1282.

Currently, a total of 54 JICA volunteers working in Nepal in the areas of community, development, education, environment, health traffic management, engineering, waste management, air traffic safety, agriculture and women empowerment.
