Medicine consignment stuck in India
Birgunj, Jan 8: Seventy trucks carrying medicine worth around Rs 450 million are stuck in the Indian town Raxaul across the Nepal-India border due to the ongoing agitation called by the Madhes-centric parties at the transit point and the unofficial blockade imposed by India.
The trucks that have arrived at the transit point in Birgunj have not been able to enter Nepal and travel to their respective destinations due to the agitation and blockade.There is shortage of medicine, including that of life-saving ones, here these days due to the obstructions in the import of medicine.
According to the Chemists and Druggists Association of Nepal, there is still 40 per cent shortage medicines as against the demand.
“Seventy trucks carrying imported medicines are stuck in Raxaul transit point in India,” Association vice-president Prakash Khandewal said, calling on all sides concerned to be sensitive to the fact that the quality of the drugs might be damaged due to the temperature variation due to the long duration of the medicines remaining in trucks.
He expressed worry that the medicines getting stuck for four months might damage their quality.
A large part of the medicines imported from India enters Nepal through the Raxaul transit point alone. Nepal annually imports medicines worth around Rs 35 billion from India and third countries. RSS
