Police arrest two along with endangered Eurasian Eagle Owls
Itaharai, Jan 11: Arrest of two persons along with the endangered Eurasian Eagle Owls, commonly known as Huchil, has revealed that illegal trade of the rare bird is on the rise in the recent times.
Two youth poachers were arrested based on a tip off from near Tengrakhola on Sunday for possessing six baby owls.Deputy Superintendent of Police Om Adhikari said that Bishal Tamang and Rojan Bhujel of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City-13 were arrested for carrying the endangered birds.
Police suspect that the smugglers could have used the local residents to collect such birds and insects in the local areas and then supply such invaluable things to a certain area clandestinely. It is said that each baby owl is sold for a price of upto Rs 500,000 in the Gulf nations.
Huchil is an endangered bird and is listed in the Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES).
