Lawmakers point out need of cooperation to address Madhes demands
Kathmandu, Jan 21: Lawmakers at the clause-wise discussion on the ‘First Amendment Bill of the Constitution’ in Legislature-Parliament today stressed on the need for all sides to provide help and cooperation to address demands of Madhesi people.
They, however, said that it was not a good step to amend the constitution shortly after it was promulgated.Delivering his view in the meeting, Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Dr Minendra Rijal pointed out the need to determine electoral constituencies on the basis of population and geography.
He also claimed that the amendment proposal tabled at parliament by the NC in a bid to address demands of Madhes-based political parties was relevant and balanced.
Likewise, lawmaker Ongdi Sherpa said that the amendment proposal should be flexible to end the existing crisis of the country, urging the major parties to focus on addressing the demands of Janajatis, indigenous, women, Dalits and marginalised groups.
Similarly, another lawmaker Bimalendra Nidhi viewed that population should be the base to form an electoral constituency in every district.
He also suggested forming 83 electoral constituencies in the Tarai Madhes and 82 in the hilly and mountainous districts to end Madhes problems and address demands of all parties.
Likewise, Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, Prem Suwal, Durga Poudel, Jayadev Joshi, Ramnarayan Bidari, Yogendra Chaudhary, Chham Bahadur Gurung, Rupa Maharjan, Romi Gauchan Thakali, Tulasa Rana and Prakthiksha Tiwari among other expressed their view in the meeting. Next parliament meeting will convene at 11 am on January 22.
