Martyrs Week from tomorrow



Kathmandu, Jan 23: The nation is marking the Martyrs Week from tomorrow in commemoration of the known and unknown martyrs who laid down their life for the cause of the country and securing rights for the people.

The Main Celebration Committee has scheduled various programmes for that purpose. The Martyrs Week is being observed every year since 2012 Bikram Sambat era (1956 AD) under the aegis of the Kathmandu Metropolis.As per the time-honoured tradition, this year also the Kathmandu Metropolitan City is organising commemorative programmes at the four different spots in Kathmandu where the four leading martyrs attained martyrdom. The four leading martyrs are Shukraraj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Gangalal Shrestha and Dasrath Chand.

They were handed down death sentence for waging struggle to overthrow the Rana family rule in 1931.

The KMC stated that tributes would be paid to martyr Shukraraj Shastri at Pachali on January 24, the same place and day 67 years he attained martyrdom, to Dharma Bhakta Mathema at Sifal on January 27 and to Gangalal Shrestha and Dasrath Chand at Shova Bhagawati on January 29.
