India welcomes amendment of Nepal’s constitution as ‘positive development’

Kathmandu, Jan 24: India has welcomed Saturday’s amendment of the new constitution describing it as a ‘positive development’.
“We regard the two amendments passed yesterday by the Nepali Parliament as positive developments”, reads a press statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs today. India has however said that it hoped that other outstanding issues are similarly addressed in a ‘constructive spirit’.
The Legislature-Parliament on Saturday passed the amendment to establish delineation of constituencies based on population followed by territory and a provision to ensure proportional representation in the state bodies. The amendment carried with support of five major parties comes in response to the demand of the Tarai-based parties, that have been staging protest against the new constitution for over four months.
