Second plane crash in Myagdi in 17 years
Beni (Myagdi), Feb 26: Myagdi district does not have an airport as of yet, but it has served as a witness to two major air fatalities in the past 17 years.
Two aircrafts on their way to Jomsom of Mustang from Pokhara of Kaski met with an accident in the mid-way in Myagdi, taking the lives of 41 people.Pokhara-Mustang flight service came into being after the airstrip was constructed at Puthang of Marpha VDC in 1977. The first aircrash took place almost 21 years after the service started. A Lumbini Airways aircraft crashed near Khopra of Shikha VDC of Myagdi on August 21, 1998. A total of 18 people died in the crash.
The second air crash that took place on February 24, Wednesday morning involving a Tara air plane took the lives of 23 people including two foreigners. The Twin-otter aircraft crashed at Solighopti bhir of Dana VDC-2 of the district.
Like in the recent one, the crash that took place in 1998 was also blamed on adverse weather conditions. However, the real reason is yet to be known even after an investigation of the same. The government has also formed an investigation committee to probe the February 24 air crash.
