Chitwan National Park to relocate 10 one-horned rhinos to Bardiya and Shuklaphanta

RATNANAGAR, Jan 16: Chitwan National Park is set to relocate 10 one-horned rhinoceros to Bardiya National Park and Shuklaphanta National Park within a month.

Last year, 5 rhinos were transferred Bardiya National Park. The Park targets to shift 30 rhinos to Bardiya National Park and Shuklaphanta National Park in three years.

Director General of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Man Bahadur Khadka said informed that the translocation of rhinos will begin as soon as Chitwan National Park finishes bringing back the wild buffaloes from Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve.

Information officer at CNP informed that a total of 83 rhinos were relocated to Bardiya National Park over the years but are dwindled to 34 because of hunting and killing.

The current rhino population in Nepal is 645, of which Chitwan National Park alone houses about 600.
