Parajuli recommended Chief Justice

KATHMANDU, June 29: A meeting of the Constitutional Council held Thursday recommended Acting Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli to the post of the Chief Justice.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba proposed the name of Acting CJ Parajuli to the post of CJ. Deputy Speaker Ganga Prasad Yadav said that the meeting unanimously recommended the name of Parajuli.

As per the process, Parajuli would face the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee. He would be appointed to the post of CJ after the Committee approves his name.

The post of the CJ is lying vacant after CJ Sushila Karki’s retirement on June 7.

As per the Article 284 of Constitution of Nepal, the Constitutional Council recommends the name of chiefs and members of the constitutional bodies. The Constitutional Council consists of the Prime Minister as the chair while Chief Justice, Speaker, Chairman of the National Assembly, leader of the opposition party in the Legislature-Parliament and Deputy Speaker of the Legislature-Parliament as the members.

In case of the recommendation of the CJ, the Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs remains in the capacity of the Constitutional Council member too. RSS
