EC preparing for province assembly, House of Representative elections, seek required laws
KATHMANDU, June 30: The Election Commission ( EC) is learnt to have been making preparations for holding the provincial elections in the second week of coming October and the elections of House of Representatives in the third week of November.
Likewise, preparations are on to hold the elections of National Assembly in the last week of October.
The Election Commission office bearers Friday called on Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba at the Singha Durbar to present the election work schedule.
The delegation headed by Chief Election Commissioner Dr Ayodhee Prasad Yadav comprising Commissioners Narendra Dahal, Ishwori Prasad Paudyal, Sudhir Kumar Shah and EC officiating secretary Maheshwor Neupane, among others urged the government to approve the laws required for holding the House of Representatives elections by coming mid July.
As per the constitutional deadline, the three-tiers of elections shall be held by upcoming January 21. The delegation also apprised the Prime Minister of the need for timely amendments to the act relating to voters’ name list. It has suggested the completion of necessary works required for determining the electoral constituency of the Province Assembly and House of Representative by coming July 30.
The EC is committed to holding the elections of the province assembly and the House of Representatives as per the proposed date.
During the meeting, the CEC apprised the Prime Minister of the operation of the second phase of local level elections, arrangements made for vote counting and ongoing preparations for the upcoming third phase elections scheduled for September 18.
The EC also thanked the government for its logistic and human resource support as well as security arrangements during the elections.
On the occasion, the Prime Minister said he was happy to see the successful completion of the recent second phase of local level elections and appreciated the EC for its ability to hold the elections successfully.
He gave assurances of the formation of Electoral Constituency Delineation Commission, formulation of required laws and amendments to some acts soon.
The first round of local elections was held on May 14 in three provinces (3,4 and 6) and the three provinces (1, 5 and 7) saw the holding of second phase election on June 28 and election in the province-2 is taking place on September 18 under the third phase. RSS
