NWA warns agitation if 33 percent women representation not guaranteed in cabinet
KATHMANDU, July 24: Nepal Women’s Association (NWA), a sister wing of the Nepali Congress, has demanded that 33 per cent women representation be insured in the cabinet or it would launch agitation against the government if done otherwise.
“Although the constitution has clearly mentioned about women representation, there was no remarkable representation of women in KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led governments. Neither the incumbent government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba has also remarkable presence of women,” said Uma Regmi Chairperson of NWA, speaking at a press conference organized at the Reporters’ Club Nepal on Monday.
Chairperson Regmi, stating that the country got the constitution due to women’s movement, further added, “Women should be empowered with the rights as ensured by the constitution.”
“We also met with Prime Minister and Party President Deuba and urged him to induct 33 per cent women in the cabinet. He told that he would think about it, she furthered.
“We will launch agitation if 33 per cent of women representation in the cabinet is not guaranteed,’ added Regmi.
Not a single woman has been represented in the cabinet-led by Sher Bahadur Deuba.
