KATHMANDU, Aug 27: The UN World Food Program (WFP) has started distribution of food supplies to 180,000 people struck by massive flooding in the wake of incessant monsoon downpours.

The WFP is coordinating with the local bodies to distribute two weeks’ supplies of rice and cereal grains in Saptari, Rautahat, Banke and Bardiya districts, according to WFP Information Official, Sitashma Thapa.

Thapa added that WFP will hand out cash to additional 40,000 people struck by flooding in Rautahat district who have already been rehabilitated in the local market areas.

As per the government record, flooding in the past few days has submerged 80 per cent of the territory in Terai causing widespread damages on a large number of houses, stored food, livestock and crops. The flooding in Terai – known as the country’s storehouse of food grains – will likely impact the production of paddy grains and wheat in the coming days.

In coordination with partner agencies and government bodies, the WFP will also be distributing additional 200 metric tons of nutritional food supplies targeting 19,000 expectant and new mothers including 27,700 babies in the age group of six days to 23 months in 13 districts worst hit by flood.
