Govt suggested on raising issues of climate change and combatting terrorism in UNGA

BHISMA RAJ OJHA, KATHMANDU, Sept 15: The government has been suggested a need for raising the issues of climate change impact, combating terrorism and the least developed and land-locked countries in the 72nd United Nations General Assembly.

The National News Agency (RSS) had approached diplomats and foreign affairs experts, seeking their suggestions to the government before its participation in the UN important event.

Nepal should raise the agenda of world’s collective efforts to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), of poverty alleviation nuclear arms-free world and other issues concerning the LDCs wisely and with priorities, they said univocally.

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and his delegation is leaving for the UNGA on coming September 19. The meeting of Council of Ministers Monday approved the participation of the Nepali delegation in the UNGA.

UN’s former permanent representative of Nepal. Dr Jayraj Acharya, was of the view that Nepal should raise the issues focusing on combined efforts against terrorism, consequences of climate change facing Nepal like countries and collective efforts for poverty reduction.

Seeking the attention of the world to address the problem of displacement of minorities and indigenous nationalities due to the impact of climate change, he asserted,” Nepal should strongly raise its voice in favour of the nuclear arms -free world.

Nepal has been regularly taking part in the UNGA since it became the UN member in 1955.
The then Prime Minister BP Koirala was the first Prime Minister of Nepal to take part in the UNGA in 1960.
Nepal is always committed to the panchasheel (five principles of foreign policies) and has special contribution to the United Nations Peace Keeping Mission. It has been sending security personnel to the Mission since the past around six decades.

Dr Suresh Chalise, who already served as the Nepal’s Ambassador for the United States and the United Kingdom, said Nepal should utilise the UNGA as a platform for drawing the global concern to find a peaceful solution to the political unrest seen in the Asia and Middle East Asia.

The competition of demonstrating the strength of arms in these regions is really a matter of grave concern and the attention of international community should be drawn towards it,” he asserted.

The world community from the same forum should be apprised about success that achieved in the attempts to upgrade the nation to a developing country ( from the category of the LDC) by 2022, he added.

The PM’s scheduled visit has been taken with more priority in the context that Nepal has fielded its candidacy for member in the International Human Rights Council under the United Nations, and that no participation has been taken on behalf of Nepal in the 70th and 71st UNGA at Prime Ministerial level.

PM Deuba’s Foreign Affairs advisor Dr Dinesh Bhattarai said there was a need for Nepal to apprise the world of its political achievements and events, and incidents occurred in the world, in the capacity of UN’s member.

He also said Nepal’s foreign policy is centered on ways to carry out development work, and wipe out poverty by through harmony, assistance and support in the world community, and by promoting relations with neighboring countries based on trust, while focusing on national interest.

The 72nd Regular Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 72) convened at UN Headquarters on September 12 and it will run until September 25 . ‘Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet’ is the theme for the session. RSS
