Swollen Kaligandaki sweeps away school, 24 households at risk

MYAGDI, August 15: The flood-fed Kaligandaki River has blown away a school in Myagdi district this morning.

The river changed the course and swept away the six-room Dhawalagiri Primary School at Kopchepani in Annapurna rural municipality-4, informed school management committee chairperson Durga Khadka. As many as 20 students are pursuing their education in the school.

The area has witnessed torrential rains for the last couple of days. The Kaligandaki flood has gushed into the human settlement and is causing land erosion.

Ward Chairperson Chandra Prakash Fagami said that the flood has put at risk the 24 households of the human settlement at Kopchepani along the trekking route leading to Mustang.

“I had informed the rural municipality and district disaster management committee about the loss”, he said.

The teaching and learning activities have been completely halted after the sweeping away of the school building. Alternative arrangement for school operation is being explored, the school management said. RSS
