Scrub typhus detected in 145 people

CHITWAN, Sept 17: A total of 145 out of 802 people whose blood was checked in the past two months have tested positive for scrub typhus, said the District Public Health Office, Chitwan.

Those infected with the disease include 50 from Chitwan, 37 from Nawalparasi, 22 from Gorkha and 36 from other districts.
The total 184 people were found infected with the disease during the same period last year. Scrub typhus, also known as bush typhus, is a disease caused by bacteria called Orientia tsutsugamushi. It is spread to people through bites of infected larval mites.
Meanwhile, dengue has been detected in nine people among 561 whose blood was tested, said the DPHO. Those infected people include four from Chitwan, two from Nawalparasi and Gorkha each and one from Rupandehi.
