sexual health, things to do after sex

What do you do immediately after having sex? You may cuddle for a bit or turn around and fall asleep or get up, slip your clothes back and leave or go to the bathroom. The post-few minutes after sex is crucial period to make sure you keep problems related to your reproductive health at bay and improve sexual and emotional intimacy since post-sexual intercourse behavior has a huge impact on your health and relationship.

Here, we have outlined, as recommended by the gynecologists, some of the important things you should after sex.

Always Urinate

Urinating after sex is important to avoid urinary tract infections. Any bacteria that may have entered the vagina is removed when women urinate after sex.

David Kaufman, a New York City urologist, says that bacteria have tiny pilli that act as Velcro hooks, which allow them to attach themselves to the urethral lining.

“Vagina is a mucosal surface. Therefore, it secretes its own lubrication and has its own ‘healthy’ bacteria and that should not be altered.”

“But peeing after sex can dramatically bring down the possibility of urinary tract infections in women.”

Thus it is always recommended to try to urinate within the 15 minutes of having sex. Six-Minute cuddling is not a bad idea.

Cleanse gently

It is always recommended to clean outside of your vagina after sex. But you should avoid using fragrant soaps and strong vaginal washes that may irritate the vagina.

Perfumes can contribute to an overgrowth of odor-producing bacteria, according to Jessica A Shepherd, a Canada-based SweetSpot Lab expert.

Thus, you should use warm water and fragrance-free soap and while cleaning your vulva.

Vaginal douching is also a bad idea, gynecologists recommend. Douching is a method of wash out the vagina, usually with a mixture of water and vinegar. Douches that are sold in drugstores and supermarkets contain antiseptics and fragrances. A douche comes in a bottle or bag and is sprayed through a tube upward into the vagina.

Douching can cause micro-tears in vagina blood vessels and thus increase infection risk leading to vaginal itching, swelling and painful sex.

Check for signs of bleeding or pain

You should always keep a tab of signs of bleeding or pain after sexual intercourse because post-coitus trauma could be a result of infection, irritation from the lubrication or condom or even a more serious gynecological condition.

If you notice any of these signs, you must immediately see the doctor.

Drink cranberry juice

Drinking cranberry juice can a smart preventive measure to reduce the chances of urinary tract infection. Cranberry juice can change the pH of the urine and make it a less hostile environment for bacteria to grow.

According to research, drinking a glass of 240 ml cranberry juice a day reduces symptomatic urinary tract infections by nearly 40 percent in women.

Check condom

After sex, it is important to look for the signs of condom malfunction and make sure the condom did not break. If the condom broke, a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or pregnancy is highly likely.

In such a case, you should consider getting a pregnancy test or STD testing.

Cuddle

Cuddling after sex means more for both men and women, be it right after sex or after cleansing body. Many men roll over and not want to cuddle. But, in fact, the most important part of sexual intimacy is cuddling because it helps partners connect at the emotional level. Cuddling is a post-sex reward in every relationship which indicates affection and trust and, thus, ignoring it can be a mistake. Cuddling enhances overall sexual experience and makes it very pleasurable.

According to studies, a woman’s body is flooded with oxytocin, bonding chemical, after sex or orgasm, which is why they long for affection. Thus, you should take advantage of it by cuddling, bonding and feeling even closer to your partner. Cuddling also helps lower stress.

Indulging in cuddling for six minutes is good for emotional and sexual health.

Ask her how she felt

Engaging in conversation with your partner about how she felt can be a valuable pointer. You can tell her what you want and expect her honesty so that you can improve your sex life.

Complement her

Most women feel vulnerable after sex. Thus, complementing your partner, while cuddling after sex, can be a very charming step after sex. It blocks insecurities and assures partner of affection and companionship.

Shower together

Showering together is an enjoyable and shared experience that adds more intimacy between the partners. It is a place where you can give each other full attention. Also, sex can be messy. Thus, showering and washing off all the fluids and sweat will make you feel refreshed.
