Kami Rita Sherpa summits Everest for record 23rd time

KATHMANDU, May 15: Kami Rita Sherpa has successfully climbed the summit of the Mount Everest for the record 23rd time, bettering his own record he set on May 16 last year.

The 49-year-old mountaineer and guide reached the summit of the world’s highest peak at 7:50 am in the morning, informed Rameshwor Niraula from the Everest base camp, an official from the Tourism Ministry.

Sherpa, who has vowed to retire only after reaching the Everest summit 25, first climbed Everest on May 13, 1994. He has also summitted K2, Lhotse and Manaslu one time each and Cho Oyu 8 times.

Appa Sherpa and Phurba Tashi Sherpa, who have ascended the peak for 21 times, have already retired.

Sherpa, who hails from Thame village of Solukhumbhu district, works as a senior climber guide at Seven Summit Treks.
