Tug of war between opposition and ruling party over Governors dismissal



KATHMANDU: Former Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Rashtriya Prajatantra Party (National Democratic Party) has criticized the current government’s decision along with the President’s move to unilaterally sack the Governors of all the seven provinces.

The Governors that were appointed under the Sher Bahadur Deuba government of the Nepali Congress (NC) was unilaterally sacked a day before, while names of new governors were finalized yesterday and formally appointed through the swearing-in ceremony today at the President’s official residence in Sheetal Niwas.

Former DPM Thapa has alleged that the current Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has made the position of the Governors into the induction of party cadres.

He has expressed grave concern on NCP inducting its party members to the post of Governor. Thapa had expressed his concerns over his social media handle on Twitter.

On the contrary, the General Secretary of the NCP, former Minister and current Member of the House of Representatives Bishnu Poudel have supported the move of his party toward relieving the previous Governors and appointing senior party members to the position. Poudel stated that “new names were recommended as the government wants to increase the pace at work”.

He also stated that “it will be easier now for the government to function, and the Governors also have to be a firm representative of the current government.”The government has to work at a particular pace and it has to be matched by the Governor, and hence new names were recommended.

The government needed firm representatives to this position and hence took the decision to appoint new Governors he said. Finally, he also said that we are living in a democracy, and everyone has a right to protest the decision” he said.
