Brick Kiln murders: Trial begins in Rautahat district court
KATHMANDU, Nov 8: Disgraced Nepali Congress (NC) leader and former member of the House of Representatives Mohammad Aftab Alam is in custody for the brick kiln murder case.
The court has started hearing the case and the lawyers from both sides have begun their argument.
The court hearing has begun under a single bench of Justice Dipak Dhakal. The matter of whether to keep Alam in custody or not till the time of the final judgment was argued on today as informed by Abhimanyu Patel.
According to the information received, the Government lawyer has put forward his argument to the court.
Rautahat’s district prosecutor Khagindra Katuwal, assistant prosecutor Surya Raj Dahal, and district judge Rudra Prasad Panthi will be the prosecutors’ representing the government.
Senior advocate Shambhu Thapa, Raman Shrestha, Sher Bahadur KC, Gopal Krishna Ghimire, Prem Bahadur Khadka, Sunil Pokharel, and Yogendra Bahadur Adhikari will be defending Alam.
The latter is being tried in the merciless killings of over 23 people wounded after a bomb blast, and then burnt alive in a brick kiln to hide the evidence.
Alam is being tried on the counts of murder and destruction of evidence. Although many accused in the incident are still at large, Alam will be kept behind bars and the prosecutors’ are likely seeking life imprisonment. For the victims, senior advocate Dr. Yuvraj Sangraula will be representing them.
