Speaker election process to begin next week

Election of Speaker

KATHMANDU, Dec 20: A meeting of the Business Advisory Committee has decided that the House of Representatives meeting to be held on Dec 27 will unveil the schedule for the election of Speaker, according to parliament secretariat.

The meeting, chaired by Deputy Speaker Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe, also established consensus on Tumbahamphe chairing today’s parliament meeting.

Since the resignation of Krishna Bahadur Mahara following the attempted rape allegation in October, the position of Speakers has laid vacant.

Since the ousting of Mahara, President Bidya Devi Bhandari favorite Tumbahamphe has claimed a stake on the position and has refused the ruling Nepal Communist Party’s request to step down.

But, it has been learned that Tumbahamphe is likely to submit her resignation to pave way for the ruling Nepal Communist Party to field its candidate for the position of Speaker.

The Constitution of Nepal states that the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the HoR shall be representatives from the different parties.
