MAHANTA THAKUR TO CHAIR HOR MEETING

KATHMANDU, Jan 20: Deputy Speaker Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe is set to tender her resignation at the parliament secretariat before the start of the House of Representatives meeting. The HoR meeting is scheduled at 1 pm today.

She is also holding a press conference at the parliament building after the HoR meeting, according to parliament sources.

Since her resignation will vacate the leadership, for the time being, Rastriya Janta Party Nepal leader Mahanta Thakur, as the senior-most citizen, will chair the meeting.

The House is also expected to begin the process for the election of Speaker today.

Tumbahamphe, a top contender for the speaker, had turned down the party’s formal request to resign and promised a way out as soon as the ruling party picks a speaker.

After the chairmen duo K P Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal decided to nominate Agni Prasad Sapkota in the speaker’s election on Sunday, Tumbahamphe had met Oli asking for a reason to remove her. In response, Oli had requested her to cooperate with the party since the party was in no position to give away the position of the speaker.

According to party sources, Oli has held talks with General Secretary Bishnu Paudal and parliamentary party deputy leader Subash Nembang regarding Tumbahamphe’s discontent.

The sources added that the party is preparing to hand her the duty of a minister.
