NC NOT TO FIELD ITS CANDIDATE IN SPEAKER ELECTION

KATHMANDU, Jan 21: Ruling Nepal Communist Party lawmaker Agni Sapkota has filed his candidacy for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

Sapkota registered his candidacy this afternoon at Lhotse Hall of Federal parliament Building, New Baneshwor.

Deputy-leader of the NCP Parliamentary Party Subas Nembang proposed his candidacy while NCP’s Chief Whip Dev Gurung and lawmaker Onsari Gharti and Rastriya Janata Party Nepal lawmaker Laxman Lal Karna seconded it.

The Parliament Secretariat has set 11: 00 am to 2:00 pm as the deadline to register candidacy for the post of Speaker.

The lower house is electing a new speaker on Jan 26 to replace Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who resigned in October following an attempted rape allegation by a female parliament staffer.

Meanwhile, the main opposition party Nepali Congress has decided not to field its candidate in the speaker’s election.

A meeting of the parliamentary party of the NC held today morning took the decision not to compete in the election.
