National Assembly Election

KATHMANDU, Jan 23: The voting of the National Assembly (NA) election is underway in all seven provinces. The voting began at 10:00 am and will continue till 4:00 pm.

The Election Commission is conducting the NA election to elect the 18 members of the 59-member upper house as the two-year tenure of 19 members is expiring on March 3.

One member will be appointed by the President upon the recommendation of the cabinet.

According to Article 86 (3) of the Constitution of Nepal, the term of office of the one-third of the NA shall expire in two years, another one-third in four years and the tenure of the final one-third will be six years.

According to the EC, a total of 2,056 voters comprising of 550 province assembly members and 1,056 local representatives are casting their votes.

A total of 45 candidates from the seven provinces from six parties, including Nepal Communist Party, Nepali Congress, Samajbadi Party, Rastriya Janta Party Nepal, Rastriya Janamorcha and Nepal Labor and Peasant Party, contesting the election.

According to the EC, the result of the election will be published today itself.
