70th Democracy Day

KATHMANDU, Feb 19: The government has observed the 70th Democracy Day amid a special ceremony in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

Nepal celebrates the National Democracy Day every year on Falgun 7 to commemorate the attainment of democracy after the abolition of the 104-year long autocratic Rana Regime.

On the occasion, a Nepal Army Helicopter hoisted banner reading 70th National Democracy Day-2076.

A contingent of Nepal Army presented a guard of honor to President Bidya Devi Bhandari and cultural processions of various communities were also displayed.

Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli, Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher JBR, Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota, Chairperson of the National Assembly Ganesh Prasad Timilsina, ministers, heads of constitutional bodies and senior employees of the government were also present in the program.

Earlier, President Bhandari, Vice-president Nanda Bahadur Pun and PM Oli had issued separate statements to express best wishes on the occasion.

In her statement, Bhandari expressed the wish that Democracy Day would fulfill people’s desires for socio-economic transformation.

PM Oli stated that the government is committed to “Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali” campaign while Pun had urged all the concerned to help people realize their dreams of economic development and prosperity.
